My Why.
As the daughter of immigrant parents, I have always been taught the importance of listening and valuing the stories of the underrepresented. In many ways, my parents were teaching me the importance of “thinking globally and acting locally”. My understanding of socioeconomic disparity, poverty, and lack of access to resources in education and health became underlying lessons learned from my parents’ personal stories and those of family members still living in those realities. With a broad and diverse view of the world, I knew that my awareness had to become action. My projects began when I was only 11 years old, creating care packages for homeless neighbors-in-need within my community. In 2015, Roots Strong was born. In 2018, it became an official 501(c)3 non-profit organization. My awareness informed my call to action on how I could personally contribute to shifting the narrative. My solution? Empowering communities through sustainable outreach that (1) targets youth empowerment, (2) establishes institutions for improved access to education, and (3) provides lasting change that can be continued by the community and its leaders to foster sustainability.
Roots Strong all began with a mission and a passion. My heart is in serving our children and ensuring that they have access to resources for their success, no matter where they come from.
Our Work & Commitment.
We are committed to empowering communities by leading transformative work within underserved and marginalized areas. We particularly seek to empower the lives of our youth. At the root of our global society are our youth. Every decision made ultimately affects their wellbeing. When one fortifies the roots of a tree, one not only cultivates the growth of a single tree but of an entire forest. Likewise, we firmly believe that by pouring into our youth, we have the opportunity to empower communities for generations to come.
Children and adolescents are one of the most underrepresented and marginalized groups in society. We seek to give our youth a voice by empowering them in education, health, literacy, and environmental efforts for success. To date, we have built two fully-equipped libraries, a computer lab, have led two natural disaster relief efforts, supported schools through school supplies donations, and have organized a Christmas family sponsorship program to support local Detroit families in need.
